fruits and veggies for GM diet

When the GM company came up with their unique diet in 1985, the target audience was the company’s employees. The diet was to whip them back into shape to make them more productive at work. (According to New York Times, it is a myth that the GM company is behind this diet.)

Well, the plan exceeded expectations, and now it’s no longer just a reserve of the giant motor company’s employees. The meals in this plan mostly include vegetables with drastically reduced meat intakes. However, there is still some meat included in the original meal plan.

That is why I have decided to look into the vegetarian option and skip meat altogether.

SPECIFICS OF THE GM DIET PLAN

Hydration is an essential part of the plan, and so you are instructed to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. Exercise is not an all-important part of this diet, but you are required to refrain from any strenuous workout in the first three days.

At some days, you will be required to consume at least two bowls of the GM Wonder Soup, made of celery, tomatoes, cabbage, onions, and bell peppers.

The diet is broken into 7 days, and the entrails of each day are as follows.

DAY #1 (MEAL PLAN)

Day 1 GM diet plan 3

Drink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Watermelon/melons, cantaloupe, lime, oranges, apples, pomegranates & strawberries

Don´t eat:

– Bananas, grapes, litchi, mangoes & other fruit rich in carbs and potassium

Being the first day, you are required to eat only fruits all day long. Any fruit will do except banana or any other fruit that is high in sugar (such as grape, lichi or mango). You are encouraged to eat watermelon or cantaloupe in plenty for its hydrating effect.

The best part?

There are no specifications in quantity and frequency of your meals. You can easily eat pure fruits even 20 or more times a day to make you feel full. Similarly as with the original version of GM diet, you need to drink at least half a gallon of water (around 2 liters) a day.

Just remember this day is only fruits day to increase your daily intake of antioxidants and vitamins.

DAY #2 (MEAL PLAN)

mealplan of gm diet day two

Drink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Large boiled potato (in the morning), lettuce, cabbage, beets, beans, carrot, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, onion, broccoli & cauliflower

Don´t eat:

– Potatoes (breakfast in the morning is the only allowed exception)

On the second day of the GM diet, your body is still adjusting to the change of your meal plan. After a day full of fruits you can introduce all sorts of vegetables into your daily food. The second day is also known as a “veggie only” day.

The best part?

You do not have to eat all vegetables raw – you can bake, steam or boil them as well. There are no specific limits on amounts of vegetables you need to eat (one exception are potatoes). My advice is to make salads your main meals (do not forget to add seasonings to make raw vegetables taste much better).

If you like spicy and hot meals, don´t forget to add chili to your salads to improve your metabolism. If you are still hungry, try to make a vegetable or tomato soup as the intake of hot watery soup will make you feel full and help you combat food cravings.

You can have potatoes too, but limit them to breakfast. Remember to stay hydrated and drink about 8 – 12 glasses of water throughout the day.

DAY #3 (MEAL PLAN)

mealplan for GM diet

Drink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Watermelon/melons, cantaloupe, lime, oranges, apples, pomegranates, strawberries, lettuce, cabbage, beets, beans, carrot, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, onion, broccoli & cauliflower

Don´t eat:

– Potatoes, bananas, grapes, litchi, mangoes & other fruit rich in carbs and potassium

On the third day of the vegetarian version of GM diet, you will be combining both day #1 as well as day #2. This way you can have all those sweet fruits and filling vegetables all day long.

Just keep in mind that you have to avoid potatoes, bananas, grapes, litchi, mangoes and other fruit rich in carbs and potassium.

Again, the quantity is not defined and you do not have to eat all vegetables raw – you can bake, steam or boil them as well. Also, don´t forget to add seasonings to make raw vegetables taste much better and chili to your salads to improve your metabolism.

If you are fighting food cravings, try to make a vegetable or tomato soup as the intake of hot watery soup will make you feel full and help you combat food cravings. Do not forget to drink a lot of water as well.

DAY #4 (MEAL PLAN)

day 4 of GM diet

Drink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Bananas (up to 8-10), milk (4 glasses) & GM special vegetable soup (1-2 bowls)

Don´t eat:

– Anything else

Finally, on the day four, you are allowed to eat that forbidden fruit – the banana. Actually, you can have up to 6 large ones or 8 medium sized. You will combine it with four glasses of milk distributed throughout your day.

All those bananas and milk are ideal for replenishing crucial minerals (such as calcium or potassium) and energy levels.

To make combating food cravings easier for you, you are allowed to have a bowl of GM vegetable soup (ideally for lunch). If you feel like you can not make it without food, you can have one even for a dinner.

Also, do not forget to drink a lot (8-12 glasses) of water. It is crucial for this diet to work to always keep yourself well hydrated.

DAY #5 (MEAL PLAN)

day 5 of GM dietDrink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Tomatoes (6), sprouts, cucumber, GM vegetable soup, substitute for a meat (Indian cheese, cottage cheese, soya chunks, curd, soybeans, beans, legumes or brown rice)

Don´t eat:

– Anything else

The day five is finally a protein day. While the regular GM diet calls for beef on this day, the Indian/vegetarian version substitutes meat with various food. You can choose one from the following:

  • Cup of Indian cheese
  • Cup of cottage cheese
  • Cup of soybeans/soya chunks
  • Cup of brown rice
  • Cup of legumes

My recommendation for breakfast is a meal that is rich in fiber (preferably boiled legumes). For a lunch, you could have a cup of brown rice with tofu. For a dinner, you can have the special GM soup with a vegetable salad.

Your daily menu will also include six whole tomatoes that will provide your body with antioxidants and fiber. Additionally, you can eat sprouts as well as cucumbers. Both are low calorie and rich in water and minerals.

Protein-based meals may lead to increased levels of uric acid within your body. That is why you need to increase your water intake on day five.

DAY #6 (MEAL PLAN)

day 6 of GM diet

Drink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Apples, sprouts, cucumber, GM vegetable soup, substitute for a meat (Indian cheese, cottage cheese, soya chunks, curd, soybeans, beans, legumes or brown rice)

Don´t eat:

– Tomatoes, anything else

You are almost done now! The day six is very similar to the day five. You are focusing on protein-rich food. However, you need to avoid eating tomatoes. While the regular GM diet calls for meat on this day, the Indian/vegetarian version substitutes it with various food.

You can choose one from the following:

  • Cup of Indian cheese
  • Cup of cottage cheese
  • Cup of soybeans/soya chunks
  • Cup of brown rice
  • Cup of legumes

My recommendation for breakfast is a meal that is rich in fiber (preferably boiled legumes). For a lunch, you could have a cup of brown rice with tofu. For a dinner, you can have the special GM soup (just do not use tomatoes this time) with a vegetable salad.

Protein-based meals may lead to increased levels of uric acid within your body. That is why you need to increase your water intake on day six as well.

DAY #7 (MEAL PLAN)

day 7 of GM diet

Drink:

– Have at least 8-12 glasses of water per day

Eat preferably:

– Brown rice, watermelon, strawberries, cabbage, broccoli, fruit juice (orange or pineapple) & legumes

Don´t eat:

– Bananas

Finally, the last seventh day of the vegetarian version of GM diet has come. Because you have made it this far, you will be rewarded. A lot of people call this day a feast day. Although you want to avoid sugar at all costs, you are allowed to substitute sweet things with a freshly squeezed fruit juice (without any added preservatives or sugar).

Not only that, you will be able to eat a lot of rice, vegetables as well as melons.

For breakfast, have a bowl of watermelon or cantaloupe. Your main meal of the day, lunch, should consist of a cup of brown rice and a cup of various vegetables. For a dinner, I recommend mixed vegetable salad. Remember to drink your recommended two liters of water (and more) for the day too.

After the seven days, you should be at least 5lbs lighter. A lot of people who follow the diet strictly lose up to 17lbs in only seven days.

TIPS FOR GM DIET

INDIAN VERSION

How do you handle hunger pangs? The first three days are the most crucial as the body is adjusting to fewer meals and nutrients. You may feel dizzy, but you can ease that through soups.

In the first three days, if you are really starving you can eat up to three bowls of GM soup a day (it will reduce your weight loss a little). This way you can distribute it throughout the day for strength and nourishment.

Water too makes you feel fuller even if for a short while.

What fruits are the best for the journey? Well, any fruit will do – except banana on the restricted days.

Watermelons contain water and fructose, and so they keep the blood sugar at its ideal level. Others include papaya, apples, kiwi, and oranges.

Just keep in mind that you are not restricted to the type of vegetables to use, and so you can knock yourself out here. You want to avoid using more than a teaspoon of oil in your cooking, and also do not dress your salads as that would add unnecessary calories.

HOW INDIAN VERSION OF GM DIET WORKS

The GM diet (especially the vegetarian version) is designed to help you lose weight in the fastest way possible. It’s said to help participants lose up to 15 lbs in only a week. Such a diet would lead to drastic changes in a participant’s life, and so you want to be fully aware of this and mentally prepared before you start.

Meals vary per day so that today’s plan is entirely different from tomorrow’s.

The intention is to improve the body’s ability to burn fat, help you healthily lose lots of weight, detox the body, and improve your metabolism. It is a low-carb diet that incorporates lots of fruits and vegetables.

Participants are not limited to one trial, but they can repeat the plan severally to achieve long-term effects. However, you are expected to allow a 5-7 day space before starting another round of the GM diet. Apart from shedding pounds, you will notice healthier skin, thanks to all the fruits and vegetables, as well as improvement in your digestive system.

The fiber content in fruits and vegetables improves the gut’s condition and the increased water intake helps the digestive process. It also makes the absorption of nutrients much easier.

Seven days isn’t such a long time. After the diet, you want to ease into regular meals with as little effort as possible. Enjoy your skinnier self!
