The Reishi mushroom is one of the world’s best natural marvels. It has been used for medicinal purposes in China for around 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest mushrooms to be used this way.

Throughout that time, it has been a hallmark of traditional Chinese medicine. The mushroom itself is traditionally soft and flat with a red cap. The cap stands out quite clearly as it almost has a varnished visual effect.

Depending on the age of the mushroom, there might be brown pores underneath the cap. It lacks any gills, and, as a result, it releases its spores through its tiny pores. These mushrooms can be found worldwide as they can survive and thrive in almost any kind of open environment.

They tend to grow as parasites on the sides of trees. However, they only grow on around two or three of every 10,000 trees. This makes it one of the rarest mushrooms to be found in the wilderness.

The Science Behind Health Benefits of Reishi Mushroom

The Reishi mushrooms have chemicals that have been proven to be very effective in treating a wide variety of health issues. They have even been proven that they can be effective against:

  • Cancerous tumor
  • Weak immune system
  • Flu and Asthma
  • Insomnia or even chronic fatigue syndrome
  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Slow metabolism

When combined with an effective weight loss program, the Reishi mushroom can be extremely beneficial for those who are taking it.

Recommended Dosage of Ganoderma Lucidum

Depending on the exact reason you are taking the mushroom, your recommended dosage may vary significantly.

Always consult your dosage with your medical professional before you decide to take this supplement!

General usage:

For the majority of people, the recommended dosage is between two and six grams a day to be taken with meals. This should be the same even if you have it as a raw fungus or as a concentrated extract.

For serious issues:

It’s when you are taking it for something more specific that the dosages get smaller and more precise. Just 600 milligrams taken a maximum of three times a day is usually the recommended amount for people who are suffering from some form of cancer, diabetes, or heart disease.

For pain management:

When it is being taken to reduce pain, then up to 72 grams can be taken every day for ten days, after which the pain should have subsided if it is temporary.

As you can see, though, the majority of the time the dose size is rather small. Most studies have found that when it is being used for treating a severe disease, it should only be used over a certain period of time. This is to ensure that the mushroom is effective, and can do its job.

5 Most Common Side Effects

At first, people assumed that Reishi has no side effects at all, but it has become clear that this is not always the case. While side effects are rather rare, you can experience following issues:

  1. Dizziness
  2. Headaches
  3. Skin rashes
  4. Lower blood sugar (diabetes or hypoglycemia patients need to be cautious)
  5. Blood thinning and gastric bleeding (be careful if you are taking blood thinners such as warfarin tablets)

Studies have shown though that these health problems are symptoms that usually arise among people who have been taking the mushroom for over 16 months or who have exceeded the recommended dosage.

Pay attention: Diarrhea and bloody stools have been reported among people who have been taking supplemental doses, and even liver inflammation has also been linked to the powdered form of this mushroom. Again, this is usually due to exceeding the recommended dosage over an extended period.

Weight Loss Advantages

While you may face several negatives, the intake comes with additional advantages:

  1. Weight loss – It’s understandable why the Reishi mushroom is very popular among people who are trying to lose weight. Because it can boost a person’s metabolism, it means that it helps burn off more body fat while doing exercises.
  2. Potent antioxidant – It can also act as an antioxidant, particularly if you take it in the morning on an empty stomach and then drink water afterward.

Pay attention: The benefits can be felt almost after two weeks. What is more, you should notice a significant increase in your health after two months of taking it.

User Feedback I Have Discovered

The majority of feedback left by users has been extremely positive. On sites like Amazon, people who have taken the mushroom for weight loss purposes have said that they have noticed positive effects on their health after just ten days.

Others have said that it takes a little longer for them, but that the speed with which benefits are noticeable are very impressive. Only in very rare cases have people said that they felt that taking the mushroom was a waste of time and didn’t have the desired effect.

Keep in mind: The majority of these people probably weren’t continuing with a proper weight loss program and were just banking on the mushroom to do all the work. It’s very rare that users have reported any form of side effects, and those who have decided to stop taking the mushroom immediately.

Best Brands & Places to Get Them

best ganoderma supplements

Reishi mushrooms can be bought online or at the majority of good alternative lifestyle stores. It can be purchased for around $10 in powder form, or even as an herbal tea. Larger quantities of the mushroom can cost between $40.00 – $50.00.

My advice is to look for best online retailers, such as Amazon, Walmart, GNC, etc.

Pay attention: You should always buy it depending on how long you plan to be taking it, and the reason you want it. Always take into consideration the recommended dosage when purchasing.

I have read all the comments and they read mainly positively, but at 67 years old, is it too late to start taking ganoderma? What benefits will it make for us at our age?

  • Susan

I’ve been taking one or two Reishi capsules a day for almost two years and love it! But is there a limit to how long I can take it? I hope not.

  • Alan

What is not mentioned in the article is that only extracted Reishi (or whatever mushroom) has therapeutic effects. We cannot digest non-extracted mushrooms, so forget the $ 10 powders etc. Extraction costs money, and good quality mushroom extracts are never cheap, unfortunately.

An excellent guide on how to judge the quality and value for money of a mushroom product can be found here: https://oriveda.wordpress.com/what-you-should-know-before-buying-mushroom-supplements/

    Don’t waste your money!!

  • HealthNut07

I have had really great experiences with ganoderma. I started taking it for it’s health benefits, but I really didn’t know how awful I actually felt until I experienced how great I felt taking it! I don’t take the supplements, but I do drink this gourmet coffee that has ganoderma infused in it. It is instant, but I will tell you it tastes way better than Folgers! And it is way cheaper than starbucks. I get mine through Organo Gold, which is the same brand as the capsules they show on this website. Check out milehighbaristas.organogold.com.. if you click on “products” it will show all the different drinks and capsules they have.

  • Lucy Hale

Very interesting information, haven’t heard of these before! Gotta get more shrooms in my diet, definitely haha!
I wonder how that herbal tea tastes like…?

  • John Truman

Been using these for a while and I have to say my immune system is definitely better – haven’t gotten sick at all in the few months since using them! Have also lost a few lbs, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily from them, or if they just gave me a little push. Anyway, the flu barrier effect in itself is worth a buy!

  • scotty

Blimey, they have such a wide range of work! I’m obese and I’m considering buying these…they seem more trustworthy than the chemical stuff, anyway. Wish me luck 😀

  • Amber

Wow, is there a limit to what mushrooms can do? They’re generally great for weightloss, since they’re so filling and low cal, and in some ways cooked they can have a vague meaty taste….delicious!
Didn’t even know they were making supplements, thanks for the article! I’ll have to look more into it!

  • Patricia

huh, idk considering the side effects i’m a bit put off. although i am easily scared off when it comes to supplements, so don’t mind me haha

are they good for cooking too, or are they a fussy ingredient?

  • sammy smith

I didn’t know this kind of mushroom existed. I knew some mushrooms were healthy, but I didn’t know about this and how it can actually burn fat. I think it’s time I purchase a bottle of Ganoderma. Thanks for sharing.

  • Gregory Terko

Hey there everyone. I am really a big fan of this site. I’ve read some really great stuff here and all of it has been helpful so far. I heard of this mushroom some years ago, but finally found out that they made supplements of them. I bought a bottle of them and I am really happy with the results. It burns fat and make you feel great. Trust me, go buy a bottle of this stuff, you will not regret it.

  • Gail88

Ganoderma has been a life saver for me for a while now. I’ve been suffering from obesity for a while and I tried everything. I was told by a close friend to try this supplement or whatever out and so I did. Well with a proper diet and working out, I was able to lose 5 pounds in the first week. I was struggling to lose that a month. Now I’m losing 2-5 pounds a week. It’s fantastic!

  • Ruth Miller

Every year I seem to get sick with the flu right around the same time, and since I am anti-vaccination that really doesn’t leave me with many options. This year I have been taking these mushrooms with the hope to boost my immune system and keep myself from becoming sick, and so far things have been working pretty well. Keeping my fingers crossed that my luck holds up through the end of the flu season!

  • David Monroe

Long story short, this stuff works. However, be very careful if you are sensitive to foods such as myself!

The first couple of times I ingested Reishi Mushrooms they upset my stomach more than a little, but each day I continued to try and try again and after four days of nauseous experiences my body finally gave up fighting and accepted that I was going to continue using this wonderful supplement.

  • Sam

Given how many forms do they come in, which method of ingestion would you recommend for a person who does not enjoy the taste of mushrooms very much? I am hesitant to give this a try only because of the flavor, every other part of me is saying give it a shot because it has some incredible reviews and frankly I could use the help with lowering my cholesterol some.

  • Steve Axdorff

Being a long-time sufferer of insomnia (hint: I am over 40 and cannot recall the last night I slept more than two hours consecutively before discovering Reishi Mushrooms) I have used more than a handful of proposed solutions to my problem. Even Ambien didn’t tone town my insomnia, in fact it just made me feel loopy and less intelligent the next day. Reishi mushrooms have a much different effect however; they wind my mind down and make sleep feel like the natural thing it is supposed to be. Each night I drink a glass of tea infused with the mushroom and sleep comes around 20 minutes after ingestion.

  • Jennifer Curtis

One thing that I really enjoyed about these mushrooms was how easy they were to consume compared to other diet supplements I had taken. In the past I had focused on pills and things of that nature, which just aren’t natural enough for me and made me feel lethargic and in the end I never wound up losing much weight because I was never active. These mushrooms give me incredible energy though, and after three weeks of use I am feeling better than ever! Can’t wait to see my final weight loss numbers at the end of the month.

  • Jenna

Well the only reason why I wanted to try out this product was because I heard that it was doing wonders for a friend of mine who had constant arthritis pain and thought I would try out the capsules. After about a week of taking the capsules I started to feel better. I am normally a sufferer of neck muscle soreness (like kinked neck muscles and muscle spasms) and fatigue, but noticed a huge improvement in both plus in the quality of sleep that I was having.

  • Kate

Well my main thing is that I don’t like mushrooms at all. So being able to have it in green tea form is really a plus for me. The tea has a very subtle earthy flavor but it doesn’t taste bitter or anything of that nature. Plus the tea has a lot of benefits including: Cholesterol, inflammation, liver, immunity, aging; and more, which would make anyone want to drink it. I have been drinking it for two weeks and I already feel healthier. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in natural health remedies.

  • Anna

I found that when I was going through some major anxiety issues, Reishi really helped me out. I was going through a really tough time in my life and was prone to anxiety attacks pretty much every day, and it was really affecting my life.

But when I heard about this herb, and how I could take it in powder, capsule or tea form, I thought might as well try it. I was on it for just over a year, and it really killed my anxiety issues. I am in a place that’s a lot better than where I was and Reishi definitely helped me with that.

  • RaelynLove

I was quite surprised to see that reishi mushrooms got really good reviews on WebMD. The average rating was 4.6 out of 5, which was pretty impressive. It seems that the main side effects reported were dry mouth and a frequent need to urinate. Other than that, a lot of people are reporting weight loss, energy gains and stronger immune systems. Still, it is important to see your physician before you start taking any supplement.

  • Amani Davis

My co-worker started a diet to get her pH balance slightly on the alkaline side. This is a little trick that’s supposed to help you lose weight. But she also said that if your pH is too acidic, it becomes harder for your body to get rid of toxins. Eventually this could become a weight issue. She started taking ganoderma to give her pH more acidity, but not so much that she’d be out of balance. I saw her a few weeks ago and she’d lost about 25 pounds following this regimen. She still exercised, but she also thought the Ganoderma had a lot to do with it.

  • chealsea123

I’ve always been a bit cautious about these types of ‘wonder herbs’ that are marketed as the cure all for all of your aches and pains. But I’ve tried the Organo Gold coffee, which has Ganoderma luciderm spores, and admittedly I haven’t been sick all winter. This is TRULY a big deal for me.

My kids bring home all kinds of germs from school and I always have a sore throat, sniffles, or some never ending cough. I don’t know if it’s the Ganoderma or not, but I will say that I’ve been feeling really awesome since I started drinking it. Not even so much as a headache. And my energy level is through the roof. Like I said, I don’t know what’s going on inside of my body. But I do know what I did differently and now I feel better. I guess you can be the judge.

  • GuiliaM

Hi Christine, I’ve heard that ganoderma contains polysaccharides, which is supposed to aid with digestion. It might also help balance the hormones, which could contribute to the whole weight loss factor. I’m just wondering how long it takes to see a weight loss effect. And is this something that you have to continue taking on a regular basis to maintain the results?

  • Millie

I just happened to be scanning through your site, but I’m really glad I read this article. I’ve seen ganoderma mentioned before as an additive in a new coffee. I really didn’t read much about it when I first saw it. But now that I’m taking a closer look at it, it really sounds good.

I like energy drinks, and supposedly ganoderma gives you a serious boost of energy. Mixing it with coffee could be a good way to get a boost in the after lunch slump, while also promoting weight loss. Best of all, it’s a natural product. You can’t beat that!
