We all know that eating fruits and vegetables is beneficial for our overall health. However, with the ample amount of these readily available, selecting the right ones can be difficult.

Do you rely just on traditional choices such as apples and oranges or do you rather experiment with exotic types? In any case, you should know that dragon fruit offers many benefits.

If you want to delay aging, prevent high blood pressure, and improve your figure, this exotic food will assist you with living a happier and healthier life. Below are seven cool benefits associated with making this fruit a part of your daily diet.

Benefit #1 – Helps with Weight Loss

people on GM diet

One of the worst issues you will experience when trying to lose weight is being able to keep your food cravings at bay. Luckily, with the help of this exotic fruit, you will get your appetite under control.

Why? Because it is very rich in fiber and incredibly low in calories. Just see for yourself in this nutritional data table.

Data is for 100g serving – 3.5oz – of fresh dragon fruit:

– Water (87g)
– Protein (1.1g)
– Fat (0.4g)
– Carbohydrates (11.0g)
– Fiber (3g)

It will help you feel full for longer than other fruits thanks to the water and fiber content. It will also boost your metabolism rate and improve your weight loss efforts.

According to MedicalDaily.com, fiber in dragon fruit helps with weight loss & digestion:

“Dragon fruit has a significant fiber content. This means it can improve the body’s bowel movements by facilitating the passage through the digestive tract. The consumption of this exotic fruit can help reduce the chances of conditions like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.”

We all know that fiber in foods is the main thing that will keep us satiated and not hungry. You won’t crave as much sweets or other junk food when you keep the amount of fiber in your diet high and this will help you reduce calories consumed.

The truth is that when you consume fewer calories than you burn, this will directly translate into gradual weight loss. Check out our popular guides about Military Diet and GM Diet to find the diet that will help you shed some pounds.

The role of fiber is really important for losing weight, according to Self.com:

“Fiber is a non-negotiable part of living a healthy life, whether you want to lose weight or not. But it can be especially useful if you’re looking to shed some pounds.”Fiber adds bulk to your diet, a key factor in both losing weight and maintaining [a healthy one],” says Mashru.

That extra volume can help you feel satisfied sooner, and since fiber stays in your system longer than many other nutrients, it can also help you feel fuller longer, she explains.

Fiber offers a few other weight-related bonuses. “High-fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables tend to be low in calories,” says Mashru. The nutrient also helps regulate your blood sugar, which is part of why refined carbohydrates like cookies that have had a lot of fiber removed can lead to intense blood sugar spikes.”

Blood sugar roller coaster is a sure way to gain some pounds. When you eat something refined, your blood sugar rises. In an hour or 2, the blood sugar plummets and you are hungry again.

Therefore it is important to stay away from refined foods and eat as much fiber rich fruits and vegetables, in case you want to lose some weight. Moreover, if you combine dragon fruit with one exercise from the most effective exercises list, you have the ULTIMATE combo for shedding those excess pounds.

Benefit #2 – Prevents High Blood Pressure & Heart Diseases

There are two main factors associated with elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular illness – stress and stiffened arteries. Considering that dragon fruit essentially “cleanses” the interior of your body, it will assist in maintaining healthy tissue within and around your heart.

This food is also known to help decrease high levels of oxidative stress – one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases.

According to great article from Wikipedia.org, oxidative stress might cause:

“Oxidative stress is thought to be linked to certain cardiovascular disease, since oxidation of LDL in the vascular endothelium is a precursor to plaque formation. Oxidative stress also plays a role in the ischemic cascade due to oxygen reperfusion injury following hypoxia.

This cascade includes both strokes and heart attacks. Oxidative stress has also been implicated in chronic fatigue syndrome. Oxidative stress also contributes to tissue injury following irradiation and hyperoxia, as well as in diabetes.

Oxidative stress is likely to be involved in age-related development of cancer. The reactive species produced in oxidative stress can cause direct damage to the DNA and are therefore mutagenic, and it may also suppress apoptosis and promote proliferation, invasiveness and metastasis.

Infection by Helicobacter pylori which increases the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in human stomach is also thought to be important in the development of gastric cancer.”

“Plasma malondialdehyde levels significantly decreased (P < 0.05), while superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant capacity significantly increased (P < 0.05) with DFE [Dragon Fruit Extract] treatment in comparison with group II. These data demonstrate that DFE treatment was effective in controlling oxidative damage and decreasing the aortic stiffness measured by PWV in STZ-induced diabetes in rats.”

Benefit #3 – Provides Antioxidants for Your Body

Antioxidants are molecules that combat free radicals that are roaming around your body. These elements are known to cause massive problems to the human organism (even cancer).

Luckily, the dragon fruit is jam-packed with antioxidants (called phytonutrients) that combat free radicals and prevent them from messing with your vital functions.

Among the most potent are:

– Phytoalbumin, vitamin C, and lycopene

The more of this fruit you can ingest, the easier it will be for your organism to go through a simple detox to maintain a healthier lifestyle and stronger immune system.

Why are antioxidants so important for your health? TheAtlantic.com explains:

“Antioxidants help fight oxidation, a normal chemical process that takes place in the body every day. It can be accelerated by stress, cigarette smoking, and alcohol. When there are disruptions in the natural oxidation process, highly unstable and potentially damaging molecules called free radicals are created.

Oxygen triggers the formation of these destructive little chemicals, and, if left uncontrolled, they can cause damage to cells in the body. It’s much like the chemical reaction that creates rust on a bicycle or turns the surface of a cut apple brown.”

“The elongation of the preincubation period of a juice from star fruit (1.25 or 2.5%, v/v) with the microsomal fraction did not alter the CYP3A inhibition, suggesting that the star fruit did not contain a mechanism-based inhibitor. Benefit #4 – Delays Aging of Skin Cells

young woman with healthy skin

There are millions of anti-aging creams and treatments that cost thousands of dollars. However, there is a simple solution that can be found in your local grocery storeAs previously mentioned, this fruit has plenty of antioxidants that work against free radicals in your body.

These are not only responsible for physical ailments, but also for the aging of your skin. The more antioxidants you will eat from this exotic fruit, the tighter and younger your skin will become.

What is more, this fruit includes phosphorus – an important mineral that is present in each and every cell of human body. Therefore, it is crucial for maintaining healthy skin cells (and youthful look).

Related research study:

“The main function of phosphorus is in the formation of bones and teeth. It plays an important role in how the body uses carbohydrates and fats. It is also needed for the body to make protein for the growth, maintenance, and repair of cells and tissues.”

– Wax, E., et al. Phosphorus in diet. 2015. Medline Plus.

Related research study:

“Estimated lycopene intake of less than 2,498 mcg/day (50th percentile) increased risk of prostate cancer by double [Adjusted OR 2.5 (95%CI 0.99-6.31)]. Intake of tomatoes, watermelon, guava, pomelo, papaya, mango, oranges, dragon fruit, carrot, tomato sauce and barbeque sauce were higher in controls compared to cases. Intake of tomato sauce of more than 2.24 g/d (25th percentile), papaya more than 22.7 g/d (50th percentile) and oranges more than 19.1g/h (50th percentile) reduced prostate cancer risk by 7.4 (Adjusted OR 7.4 (95% CI 1.17-46.8)), 2.7 (adjusted OR 2.75 (95% CI 1.03-7.39)) and 2.6 times (adjusted OR = 2.6 (95% CI=1.01-6.67)), respectively (p < 0.05 for all parameters). No oxidative damage was observed among subjects.”

Benefit #5 – Boosts Immune System Through Vitamins & Minerals

sick woman

Your immune system is the most critical component of your organism as it keeps you from getting sick and catching infections.

Fresh dragon fruit has dozens of minerals and vitamins (per 100g) such as:

– Vitamin C (20.5mg)
– Vitamin B1 (0.04mg)
– Vitamin B2 (0.05mg)
– Vitamin B3 / niacin (0.16mg)
– Calcium (8.5mg)
– Phosphorus (22.5mg)
– Iron (1.9mg)

With the combination of these, you will be able to fight any infections and illnesses much easier. Another important thing to note is that it is comprised of 80% water.

Considering that the human body requires an ample amount of water to stay hydrated and healthy throughout the day, having this as a part of your daily diet can be quite beneficial actually!

Benefit #6 – It’s Really Good for Coughs & Asthma

woman with easy breathing

Respiratory disorders such as asthma and coughing caused by common cold or flu can be difficult to deal with on a day to day basis. Although this is not a substitute for medication, it can help make your cough less tedious.

This is true thanks to its high level of antioxidants. What is more, it is rich in vitamin C that makes your immune system stronger. This way your body can fight off infections more efficiently.

Related research study:

“Several cells of the immune system can indeed accumulate vitamin C and need the vitamin to perform their task, especially phagocytes and t-cells. Thus a vitamin C deficiency results in a reduced resistance against certain pathogens whilst a higher supply enhances several immune system parameters. With regard to the common cold different studies including meta-analyses underline that the prophylactic intake of vitamin C may slightly reduce the duration of the illness in healthy persons but does not affect its incidence and severity.”

Benefit #7 – Helps with Managing Levels of Blood Sugar

With the amount of dietary fiber that is found in this fruit, your body will not experience typical sugar spikes. However, before you decide to use this fruit to manage your diabetes problems, you should consult your doctor first!

Related research study:

“In addition, the antidiabetic effect of red pitaya has also recently been demonstrated. For instance, red pitaya significantly improved insulin resistance in rats and 600 g amount of red pitaya fruit consumption every day decreased the blood glucose level in type II diabetic subjects”

The only downer is they’re $8 a pound.

  • Victoria

I was really disappointed with this fruit. It cost me $7 for one of them at an Asian store and I don’t think it even has a taste at all. Hopefully, I got a bad one, but I am not buying them anymore. I was disappointed, but I will keep trying new and different foods that I am not familiar with.

    • Lucia

You need to buy it on sale. I bought mine for $1 each and it tasted delicious?

  • tabby(:

its right about the weight loss thing, I had two cups this morning of Lipton Green Tea Superfruit Tea, Acai, Dragonfruit, and melon and I have went to the restroom like 5000 times lolXD

  • miamigirl

I was so excited to add this to my daily intake. That was before the two nights of extremely intense dreams I had. Wow. May have to stick with other veggie/fruits.

  • Diane

Wanted to get this for my dad, but he has type 1 diabetes….bad idea without seeing his doctor?

  • Alan Gordon

Just had my first glass of dragon fruit juice. What a wonderful drink

** reedit my statement: As you age, wrinkles of the body do NOT come from Radicals that are being produced from the body.

  • John

Actually having free radicals in the body declines as you age naturally. The body produces free radicals that are both bad and good, and not only bad. Prove to me otherwise with scientific journals that your opinions are true. Also, as you age, wrinkles of the body does come from RADICALS, it comes from cells losing its elasticity. Therefore, your opinion is completely invalid about it. Please do not deceive your readers, inform them correctly.

  • One of the reason why I planted dragon fruit especially the color magenta or deep purple red is its health benefits. The brix ranges from 14 to 18. Besides, it gives me an added income. Now, I am thinking of expanding the area and plant more Red Dragon Fruit.

  • thelostgirl

Lately I’ve noticed that dragon fruit is associated with anti-aging and skin care. I’m curious if you get better results by eating the fruit or applying the cream locally. Has anyone tried it successfully? If so, how long it takes until you notice some changes? I want to get rid of some nasty wrinkles and this sounds tempting.

    • Lucia

Hi eating dragon fruit doesn’t get rid of wrinkles it slows down the aging process ?So many benefits

  • siana

Don’t know why but I can’t make myself to eat this fruit but I love in smoothies. I usually make a banana, dragon fruit and spinach smoothie or a strawberry and dragon fruit one because I want to balance the sour taste. If I want more texture I just add a few spoons of Greek yoghurt to make it creamier.

  • gae

This fruit is actually 80% water? I’m a big fan on cucumbers and watermelons because I can munch on them without ballooning but dragon fruit seems like a good option too. And by the looks of it, it has so many health benefits that I would be getting much more than something to snack on.

  • zia

Lately I seem to stumble upon this fruit everywhere: FB, Pinterest, you name it. I never ate dragon fruit but everyone praises its benefits. I think I will give it a go and hope to see some improvements in the condition of my skin. I drink enough water each day, but my skin doesn’t have that healthy glow I want.

  • ramona

Unfortunately this fruit isn’t available at my local markets but I ordered it online from an organic store that delivers throughout my country and just love it. I haven’t eaten it in quite a while and I actually miss the sweet and sour taste. It seems it’s time to order it again!

  • Nicole

I just recently ate a real fresh dragonfruit for the first time. It was absolutely delicious! I’ve had dragonfruit flavored juice and tea before, but it did not come close. And that was even without realizing how good they are for you. What an amazing fruit!

  • YogaBody

I drink Dragon Fruit tea, every morning. It gives me energy and it tastes amazing. You guys should definitely try it.

    • Kristin

I’ve never seen dragonfruit tea before. does it have all the vitamins that the fruit does? i was told that some vitamins are damaged by heat, so I’m just wondering what’s left over in the tea.

  • Jamie Lei

Where do they sell this fruit? I went to my local Safeway and they had no idea what I was talking about. I do live in small town, so maybe I should try the city.

    • Gloria

I live in a small town too, but my local market (Market basket if you’re in the North) sells fresh dragonfruits. They are bright pink and spiky, perhaps not what you’d expect if you’ve only eaten the canned fruit, which is white with tiny black seeds.

  • Hannah

Oh my GOSH, I need to try this fruit. Like, I have been on this diet for my prom and I totally feel hungry all the time! But this might totally keep me full. Adorbs:)

  • GoodWife

How wonderful is this amazing fruit! It helps prevent high blood pressure and heart diseases. I have been taking care of my MIL and her doctor always tells me to take care of those 2 things, as they led to Alzheimer’s.

    • Evelyn

Hmm, heart disease and high blood pressure cause Alzheimer’s? I’ve never heard that before.

  • Sue

You had me at delays aging! I am 45 years old and I am thinking of getting botox, but I might hold off and just load up on some Dragon Fruit.

    • Denise

Dragonfruit taste way better that botulism, to be sure 🙂
